A language model knows what it was trained on. It does not know your procedures, your contracts, or last month's site reports — and when asked about them it will often produce something plausible instead of saying it does not know. Retrieval-augmented generation fixes that by looking up the relevant material from your own documents at the moment the question is asked, and answering from it. That also means the answer can be traced back to a source, which is usually the difference between an interesting demo and something people will rely on.
